Investigation of Parking Lot Pavements to Counteract Urban Heat Islands

Urban heat islands (UHI) are one of the unequivocal effects ongoing process climate change: anthropized areas suffer extreme events that affect human perception comfort. This study investigated road pavements as a passive countermeasure by comparing air temperature (AT) and predicted mean vote (PMV) for different surface materials used to pave historical square in Rome, Italy. The software ENVI-met has been compare, whole year 2021, performances existing asphalt pavement with five alternative solutions composed light concrete, bricks, stone, wood, grass. paper proposed new methodology summarize multi-dimensional results over both temporal spatial domains. simulations evening hottest month showed gives worst performance, while concrete blocks grass ensure coolest terms AT (the average is 32 °C 30 modular one) PMV maximum value 4.6 4.4 ones).
